Tourism

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about travel. For other uses of Tourism and Tourist, see Tourist (disambiguation).

Tourism is travel for recreational, leisure, or business purposes, usually of a limited duration. Tourism is commonly associated with trans-national travel, but may also refer to travel to another location within the same country. The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people "traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes".[1]

Tourism has become a popular global leisure activity. Tourism can be domestic or international, and international tourism has both incoming and outgoing implications on a country's balance of payments. Today, tourism is major source of income for many countries, and affects the economy of both the source and host countries, in some cases it is of vital importance.

In Ecuador’s major cities, yellow taxis are ubiquitous. All of them are required to use a taximeter and most of them do, but on occasion you will be asked to agree on a price instead. The same laws apply in Guayaquil and Cuenca. Everywhere else they either don’t have one or don’t use it. Know the approximate price of your trip before you get into the taxi and make sure that you and the driver agree on a price before you go anywhere. If the price he quotes you is too high you can negotiate it down a bit, something you won’t be able to do once he has already driven you to your destination, or just get out and get an honest taxi driver.

Any taxi ride in Quito should cost between USD 1 and USD 5. Pay no more than double these prices for late night rides. Taxis can also be hired for several hours or the whole day. In many cases this is cheaper than renting a car and also means you don’t have to navigate Ecuadorian roads or deal with unpredictable Ecuadorian drivers. Most main hotels can arrange to get you a taxi for the day. Most trips out of Quito cost about USD 50-70 dollars per day.

New Quito Airport taxis

May 07, 2013, 9:31 AM

There have been a lot of questions re taxis from the new airport and i certainly found it confusing so I thought it may be helpful to some to report on our recent experience. We arrived on Sunday night at 23.30 ffrom Madrid. Passing through immigration was quick and easy and entering the arrivals hall and passing through the massed ranks of taxi drivers waiting for there passenger we found the taxi desk just to left where we came out. No queues at the desk and within 3 mins we had told them our destination and were on our way to the rank just outside with a pink slip with our destination written on to hand to the driver ( you pay the driver on arrival)

All the prices for the various destinations are clearly set out for the various destinations in Quito. Ranging from $25 to our destination of Mariscal up to $30 for other parts.

The process was quick, easy and pretty straightforward. The journey into Mariscal took around 45 mins ( but that was with NO traffic whatsoever) .

Unless you speak Spanish it would help to have your full destination details including cross streets written down.

 Quito Airport Transfers

On 20th February 2013 the new Quito airport opened offering improved services for travellers and a longer runway suitable for bigger aircraft which will open up new routes into Ecuador's capital city.

The old airport was inside the city limits (less than 30 minutes from old or new town Quito) and transfer costs were reasonable (approx $15 per transfer) so we were able to offer the service of an organised pickup / dropoff to our clients. However, the new airport is much further outside of the city (approx 1 to 2 hours transfer depending on traffic) and transfer costs with the recognised service providers are much higher ($50+) which we do not consider to be good value for our clients - as a result we will unfortunately no longer be offering pre-organised airport pickup or dropoff services for transfer into the city.

We therefore recommend the following transport alternatives:

1) PUBLIC TAXI - yellow public taxis can be found waiting outside of the arrivals area, they should have a red sticker in the front window with a three or four digit number to prove that they are officially registered. Fares depend on which area of the city you wish to travel to but will typically fall between $25-35 per service - there is a sign in the airport stating the permitted rates per area of the city. Travelling from the hotel to the airport is just as easy - your hotel receptionist will be able to book / call a taxi for you; rates again should fall between $25-35 but it is best to check with the receptionist before booking.

2) SPECIALISED AIRPORT TRANSFER - there is a specialised counter in the arrivals area if you wish to reserve a private taxi instead of taking a public one outside. Rates will be higher.

3) BUS - there are two bus services in operation: Aeroservicios operate every 1/2 hour, 24 hours per day, direct to the old airport, cost $8 per person. Green public buses also operate to the Rio Coca Ecovia station or to Quitumbe bus terminal with stops on route, buses run until 22:00 each night, $2 adult fare. Unfortunately neither of these services run to the more popular La Mariscal (new town) or Centro (old town) touirst areas.

When planning your travel it is important to remember that standard check-in times are 3 hours (international) and 90 minutes (domestic) so remember to plan your travel with the increased journey times into Quito.
